Over the Easter bank holiday, I read five articles across various publications about AI’s impact on the publishing industry, particularly its effect on journalists
Whilst on a run yesterday in Bushy Park in Southwest London, I was thinking back to when I was a kid and saw a protest staged by the Musicians Union outside of the Glasgow Barrowlands. Apparently back in 1985 synthesisers were in danger of putting musicians out of business and the biggest threat was Depeche Mode, Martin Gore, and his pals were literally going to destroy the livelihoods of orchestras across Scotland and beyond. Thankfully New Wave bands and violinists managed to find a happy balance. I’m not so sure if AI and journalism will make such happy bedfellows.
Whether the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into journalism will be as harmonious is less clear. While AI offers tools to enhance efficiency—like automated transcription and data analysis—it's essential to recognise that its impact on news production is significant and multifaceted, and this transformation brings its own unique challenges.
