Last week, The Independent announced the launch of "Bulletin," an AI-powered news service designed for readers short on time. Using Google’s Gemini AI model, Bulletin will generate concise, 140-word summaries of The Independent’s articles, with journalists overseeing the process to ensure accuracy and reliability.
This initiative is initially sponsored by WeAre8, the social media platform backed by Rio Ferdinand, with The Independent producing exclusive content for the platform as part of the partnership.
What makes this particularly significant is that, to my knowledge, it marks the first time a major newspaper group has used AI to modify journalist-written content and present it in bite-sized formats. Is this the thin end of the wedge when it comes to AI’s role in journalism?
